required between the major installation steps. This guide provides detailed information about
the full installation processes of the Portal Platform and Knowledge Management and
Collaboration. It refers you to the documentation on support packages and patch installations
when required.

1) Portal Platform Description
SAP Portal Platform provides a single point of access to a variety of information sources in the company. It brings content to end users, enabling them to:
? Personalize portal content to suit their working style
? Search internal and external sources for targeted information
? Access structured and unstructured information in the organization
? Collaborate with each other Content is provided through iViews, which display in the portal client through a standard browser on the end user desktop. End users do not have to install any additional components to use SAP Portal Platform.
The Portal Platform includes:
? The portal framework, which provides the environment for creating and administering
iViews, and includes the portal components, portal services, and Portal Content
Directory (PCD).
? iViews, some of which are supplied out-of the-box. Alternatively, you can download
iViews from the iviewstudio.com, or create your own by writing custom Java code, or
Java Server Pages (JSP).
Some highlights of the Portal Platform technology are:
? The Portal Platform runs on the SAP J2EE engine, a proprietary Java application
server based on the Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE?) standards.
? It uses the database schema used by the SAP J2EE system on which it is installed.
? The portal installation can be expanded using the SAP J2EE clustering capabilities.
? The portal integrates back-end systems and other information sources, such as SAP
R/3, Enterprise Information Systems (EIS), databases, Web, etc.
This guide provides instructions for installing the Portal Platform. To learn about the portal, its architecture, properties and functions, see the guides:
