SAP Online Documentation: Data Acquisition
SAP BW∕4HANA offers flexible ways of integrating data from various sources.
The sources are connected with the SAP BW∕4HANA using source systems. SAP BW∕4HANA provides interfaces for extracting and transferring data from a large number of sources. To transfer the data, you need a DataSource in SAP BW∕4HANA. The data is loaded in SAP BW∕4HANA using the data transfer process, with transformation and filters. Transformations are used in the data transformation process in order to consolidate, clean and integrate the data.
Source system is used to set up the connection to a source for the data transfer.

In BW/4HANA, the following types of source system are available.
- SAP HANA source systems
- Big Data source systems
ODP source systems, to provide data via the ODP data replication API
- Flat files that metadata is maintained for manually and is provided using a file interface
DataSources are used to extract data from a source system and to transfer the data to the SAP BW∕4HANA system. They are also used for direct access to the source data from the BW system.
