Using the BI Accelerator Monitor
Use
The BI accelerator monitor is used for the technical administration and maintenance of the BI accelerator. It provides an overview of the current status of the BI accelerator.
The BI accelerator monitor displays the results of the consistency checks. These checks run periodically on the BI accelerator. If problems occur, the system automatically proposes appropriate actions. These actions involve BI accelerator repair functions which can be used to fix problems.
To estimate the status of the BI accelerator quickly, there is a quick overview function for the BI accelerator monitor that summarizes the most important check results.
The detailed BI accelerator monitor offers a detailed, technical overview of the hardware, BI accelerator services, any trace files that exist and the BI accelerator indexes.
In the BI accelerator monitor, it is not possible to maintain the indexes on the logical level of the BI accelerator InfoProvider. Use BI accelerator index maintenance instead.
Queries work with the accelerator component of the BI accelerator, the BI accelerator monitor works with the alert server. The accelerator components and the alert server are independent services within the BI accelerator. For this reason, queries can run without errors while at the same time, the BI accelerator monitor displays an error on the alert server.

Features
BIA Results of Check Screen Area
Test Results area
Here the system displays the results of the BI accelerator consistency checks.
Tab Page |
Description |
Summary |
The start view shows a summary of the current results of the check.
The system tries to summarize the current results of the check in such a way that, where necessary, it can repair the status of the BI accelerator in as few actions as possible.
The status display differentiates: if the status is ok if there are messages or warnings if there are errors for the status
With status and , the system usually displays an action that can fix the problem. If the proposed action can be started from the BI system, you initiate this action by choosing in the Execute column.
For each action, the user can display an explanatory long text by choosing (Display Long Text).
If details are available for a check, the user can call them by choosing (Details Available) in the Details column. The system displays the appropriate details in the Check Details screen area. |
Current Results |
This view displays the current results of the consistency checks that were performed.
The status of the checks are indicated by the colors , or .
The system displays general information about each check: the length of the check (in seconds), date and time at which the check was started, the check set within which the check was started.
For each check, the user can display an explanatory long text in the Long Text column by choosing (Display Long Text).
If a check determines that an action is required to solve the problem identified, the system displays the action in the table. If applicable, you start the action by choosing in the!s_b_exec.gif! Execute column. Choose to display an explanatory long text.
If details are available for a check, the user can call them by choosing (Details Available) in the Details column. The system displays the appropriate details in the Check Details screen area. |
History |
This view returns the results of previous check runs for the BI accelerator consistency checks so that you can track developments or changes in the results.
The system displays general information about each check: the length of the check (in seconds), date and time at which the check was started, the check set within which the check was started.
For each check, the user can display an explanatory long text in the Long Text column by choosing (Display Long Text).
Since this information is not current, the system does not propose actions. |
Check Details area
If more details are available for the check result, the user can display these details here.
If problems are listed with BI accelerator servers, you can display the affected servers in the details area.
BIA Actions Screen Area
Execute Actions area
In the Execute Actions screen area, the user can execute the most important actions directly to fix BI accelerator problems. The BI accelerator differentiates between actions that the user can start from the BI system and those that the user must carry out in the BI accelerator.
Example of an action that the user must carry out in the BI accelerator: Actions for the trace files of the BI accelerator.
On the Current Results tab page in the Check Results screen area, the BI accelerator proposes actions for check results that have status or . If these are actions that can be executed from the BI system, you can execute them directly by choosing .
In the Execute Actions screen area, the BI accelerator monitor collects all the proposed actions. It sets the indicator if the action can be started from the BI system. A Proposal field is displayed alongside the proposed actions.
Here the system supports the direct execution of the following actions:
Action |
Description |
Restart host |
This action restarts the BI accelerator hardware. |
Restart BIA server |
This action restarts all the BI accelerator servers and services. This includes the name server and index server. |
Restart BIA index server |
This action only restarts the index server. (The name servers are not restarted.) |
Rebuild BIA indexes |
If a check discovers inconsistencies in the indexes, you can use this action to delete and rebuild all the BI accelerator indexes. |
Reorganize BIA landscape |
If the BI accelerator server landscape is unevenly distributed, this action redistributes the loaded indexes on the BI accelerator servers. |
The actions Restart Host, Restart BIA Server, and Restart BIA Index Server are hierarchically related: If the host is automatically restarted the server is automatically restarted so that this action no longer has to be started explicitly. For example, the Restart BIA Server action includes a restart of the BIA index server. Therefore, as soon as a higher-level option is selected, the system automatically sets the indicator for the lower-level selection boxes and deactivates them in the selection.
BIA Action Messages area
The log display in the BIA Action Messages screen area shows information about the processes in the BI accelerator monitor.
If the system reads status information (gets check results), it writes this to the log, for example: Status Information Read from BIA.
Each message has a status (,,) and where appropriate, the option of displaying the explanatory long text by choosing
.
The Detail Level is usually one, unless the messages are structured hierarchically.
Choose
(Refresh Messages) to refresh the log display.
Choose
(Delete Messages) to delete the messages in the log.
The following functions are available in the toolbar:
Function |
Description |
(Refresh BIA Log and Actions) |
Refreshes the monitor.
The system displays the current results of the BI accelerator checks again and determines new proposals for actions. |
BIA Availability |
Uses an RFC availability test to check the availability of the connection to the BI accelerator. If no connection to the BI accelerator is available, necessary measures are initiated, where appropriate. |
Switch On BIA Load Monitor or Switch Off BIA-Load Monitor |
Calls the BI accelerator load monitor in a separate window that refreshes itself independently.
In this window, you can see the following BI accelerator key figures:
Host:Port: Host and port of the BI accelerator
Memory Process: Memory usage of TREX server process
Total Memory: Memory usage of all processes
Memory Available: Available memory
CPU of All Processes: CPU usage of all processes
CPU Process: CPU usage of TREX server processes
Response Time: Average response time of the last queries
Queries: Queries per second
Requests: Number of external requests
Requests Including Internal: Number of external and internal requests
Requests Active: Number of active requests
Hanging Requests: Number of hanging requests
You can only start one load monitor.
Since the load monitor is started in a new window, it uses a new mode. Make sure that you have a free mode before you activate the load monitor.
For technical reasons, the load monitor window is kept open. If it is covered by other windows, you can access it using the key combination ALT+TAB. You can continue to work in this window or close it.
You can only end the load monitor from the BI accelerator monitor: As soon as you start the load monitor, the pushbutton function changes to Switch Off BIA Load Monitor. After you have stopped the load monitor, the system resets the mode to the start view. |
You can choose the following options from the Goto menu:
Menu Option |
Meaning |
Analysis of BI Objects |
The Analysis and Repair of BI Objects screen appears. |
BIA Index Maintenance |
The Maintaining Aggregates/BIA Index: Select InfoCube screen appears (transaction RSDDV). |
TREX Administration Tool |
The TREX Administration Tool screen appears. |
You can choose the following options from the BI Accelerator menu:
Menu Option |

You start required actions directly from the BI system (see BIA Actions screen area above). |
Switch On BIA Load Monitor or Switch Off BIA Load Monitor |
You call the load monitor of the BI accelerator in a separate window (see Toolbar Functions above). |
Index Checks |
The Execute/Display Index Checks option allows you to determine that the system execute the following checks once a day (always at 0:00:01) and then displays the results:
? Check size of delta indexes for BIA indexes
? Compare size of InfoCube fact table with fact index
? Find indexes with status "unknown"
? Check: Table index relation
These checks are quick to run and provide important information about performance and consistency. They can be found in the analysis and repair environment.
If you do not want to run these checks regularly, you can choose the Schedule Index Checks option from the menu and specify that the system does not schedule the checks. |
Index Information |
You can call the following functions from this menu option:
? Change Global Parameters:
? Display All BIA Indexes:
? Set Delta Index:
? Switch BIA Indexes for Queries On/Off |
Invalidate Dimension Function Indexes |
The system builds a dimension function index (DFI) when a query is executed. It contains data for the JOIN between two (or more) indexes. You can reuse a DFI for similar queries or similar JOINS.
This menu option in the BI accelerator monitor allows you to delete all the DFIs in the system.
If you only want to deactivate the DFI for one particular query, you can execute the query in the query monitor (transaction RSRT1) with the debug option Do Not Use BIA Dimension Function Index. |
Activities
You get detailed information about the status of the BI accelerator and the check results.
The system proposes actions to correct errors in the BI accelerator, if applicable.
If these actions can be started in the BI system, you can trigger them there immediately.
