This document describes how to setup a template successfully for bi.ondemand.com using an Xcelsius file created using a desktop client for Xcelsius.

  1. Create an XLF template in Xcelsius 5 SP1 (Note: this is recommended, the author of this wiki page did use a later version, namely Xcelsius 5 SP3).
  2. Login to bi.ondemand.com and click on the Datasets folder.  From the "ADD NEW" doropdown button,  choose  Create Template.  Give it a name and upload the XLF file.
  3. Choose to Edit in Xcelsius Online.
  4. Add a Connection using the OnDemand>Add Connection menu option. This will create one Flash Variables connection ([Flashvar]) and two Web Service Connections ([OD_Data1 and OD_Data2) that are pre-configured to work with the Flash Variables connection using cell binding (Note -- you may delete one connection if you only need one in your template or you can add more data connections if you need more than two). It will also create a new tab in the XC spreadsheet that contains these cell bindings.
  5. Open the Data Manager (Data > Connections) and you will see a Connection of type FlashVars.  You should see the following:
    • get_data_url: (mandatory). This should be bound to the cell which the Web Service Url   of the Web Service Connections are also bound to. If you have multiple connections this should be bound to the range which holds those connections.
  6. For each Web Service Connection (OD_DataN)
    • DataN: (optional), will be named Data1, Data2..etc for each connection. You can rename these web service connections at any point. They point to the set of cells to which that connection outputs its data. This will allow bi.ondemand.com to push sample data into the template.
    1. Click on My Datasets and click copy beside the dataset you want to use.
    2. Paste the url from your buffer into the WSDL URL input box of a Web Service connection (e.g. OD_Data1 or whatever you have renamed this connection to).
    3. Click Import to import the schema.
    4. Bind the Web Service Url to the same cell as get_data_url (Note: if you used the Add Connection process in step 4 above this should already be done).
    5. Bind the headers
    6. Bind the row values.
    7. Set Refresh on Load to be true.
  1. Save your changes and then click the Back button to go back to Edit Connection step of creating a template. You should see your connection(s) listed on the screen. Note that you will need upload a screenshot image of your Xcelsius dashboard if you want to have a thumbprint image of the dashboard within bi.ondemand.com.
  2. Click Next to go to the Edit Sample Data step, you can choose to add in your sample data from the XLF if you like, and then click Finish.

Things to try if you are having problems:

  • If the Template works and the Visualization doesn't, verify that the data is actually bound. Can you see your data if you click on the Data tab? Make sure you clicked the OK button during the data binding tab.
  • If you have modified the template in XC Online after the uploading process sometimes the metadata doesn't seem to get picked up. Try Editing it and clicking the "Calculate Settings.." button. Then saving it. Note: you may need to rebind data in your Visualizations.
  • Double check you set refresh on load.
