Purpose

To determine when and why to change the default services configured in the Adaptive Processing Server.

Overview

By default when installing Business Intelligence 4.x (aka BI 4.x) the Adaptive Processing Server will contain twenty-one services,

  • Client Auditing Proxy Service
  • Custom Data Access Service
  • Data Federation Service
  • DSL Bridge Service
  • Excel Data Access Service
  • Visualization Service
  • Adaptive Connectivity Service
  • Lifecycle Management Clearcase Service
  • Lifecycle Management Service
  • Multi Dimensional Analysis Service
  • Monitoring Service
  • Web Intelligence Monitoring Service
  • Platform Search Service
  • BEx Web Application Service
  • Publishing Post Processing Service
  • Publishing Service, Rebean Service
  • Document Recovery Service
  • Security Token Service
  • Translation Service
  • Visual Difference Service

There are serveral methodologies used when creating multiple Adaptive Processing Servers.  In addition, each subservice is configured to allocate between 1-2GB per service.  This means that the out-of-the-box AdaptiveProcessingService will require ~25GB by itself.

Recommendations

SAP support recommends splitting the APS service into multiple smaller APS services divided by functional area.  This will significantly reduce overhead and resource consumption while maximizing the administration flexibility by offering the ability to stop and disable unused APS services for specific functions that are not in use.

*Splitting out the following APS's are imperative in all production deployments: *DSL Bridge and *Platform Serach
