Web Intelligence Reports can connect to NetWeaver BW using the Data Federator NetWeaver BW Connector, which accelerates the access to relational data.

In this article you will find the steps required to implement the NW BW connector to create Web Intelligence Reports.

There are 6 main steps you will have follow to have Web Intelligence Reports connecting to BW InfoCubes using Data Federator's NetWeaver BW Connector:

  1. Installing all required software (this article assumes that you have access to a NetWeaver BI server)
  2. Callback registration in BW and Data Federator Server Administrator
  3. Configuring users in Data Federator Administrator
  4. Creating a SAP NetWeaver BW datasource in Data Federator Designer
  5. Connectivity configuration between BOE and Data Federator
  6. Creating relational universe

Installing all required software

The following software is needed for this solution:

  1. NetWeaver BW 7.01 SP3 - This article assumes that you have access to a NetWeaver BW Server
  2. BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.1 FixPack 1.1
  3. Data Federator XI 3.1 (exact name is Data Federator XI 3.0 SP1)
  4. SAP GUI

Installing BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.1 FixPack 1.1

For this implementation you can do a full install of XI 3.1. This means that when you run the setup you can choose a New Install with MySQL as the CMS database and Tomcat for the Java Application Server.

Installing Data Federator XI 3.1

On the same machine where you have installed BOE XI3.1, install Data Federator XI3.1. You need to install the following components:

  • Data Federator Query Server
  • Data Federator Designer
  • Data Federator Windows Services
  • Data Federator JDBC Driver

Installing SAP GUI

Install SAP GUI on the same machine as Data Federator Server.

Callback registration in NetWeaver BI and Data Federator Administrator

Data Federator Query Server uses an ABAP callback to retrieve data from NetWeaver BW. If you don't register a callback ID in NetWeaver, you can access all metadata but not read table contents. To configure the callback:

  1. Using SAP logon. You register the call back in BW using transaction SE37.
  2. In Query Server Administrator you configure the connector and set callbackServerProgramID, to the same ID defined when in BW.

Configuring users in Data Federator Administrator

When you install Data Federator an account sysadmin (with password sysadmin) gets created. For testing you can use this account, but for customer deployments you should create additional accounts, and the sysadmin account should only be used in Query Server Administrator, for example to create create user accounts and roles that you will be using for the deployment.

For this implementation you will create 2 roles and 2 accounts:

  • Roles:
    Designer and Administrator role (nwdesigner, nwreader)
  • Users:
    Desginer and Administrator users (designerusr, readerusr)

You will use designerusr for all the tasks in Data Federator Desginer and you will use readerusr when defining the connection parameters to connect to Data Federator in Universe Designer.

Creating a SAP NetWeaver BI datasource in Data Federator Designer

In Data Federator, you reference your existing sources of data by adding datasources. When you define a datasource to connect to NetWeaver BI you specify how Data Federator connects to BW and then you select the Fact table for the InfoProvider (InfoCube, Multiprovider, Data Store Object)that you want to connect to. Connectivity configuration between BOE and Data Federator

Data Federator creates a virtual database which can be accessed trough JDBC by universes.
To configure BOE to connect to Data Federator:
An update in data access driver configuration file (jdbc.sbo) is required for Universes to connect to Data Federator using JDBC.
Data Federator provides a strategy file that can be used to generate optimized Universes for SAP NetWeaver BW datasource, this Universe strategy has to be added and configured for BOE.

Creating relational universe

Once all the configuration is completed you can create a relational universe using the strategy provided by Data Federator. With the strategy provided by Data Federator, the universe is created automatically characteristics and their attributes are automatically mapped to dimension and details, e key figures are automatically mapped to measures properly classified in classes and sub-classes.
In addition, unnecessary joins are deleted and aliases are created to avoid the loops.
