German-American Cooperation: Unexpected Cultural Differences

Relationships

  • Cultural fruit analogy: German's are like coconuts, American's are like fuzzy peaches. (Canadians are fuzzier peaches). The analogy here is that coconuts tend to have hard outer shells but soft centers, implying that it is initially difficult to get close to a German but once your do, you can easily get to know them well. Compared to fuzzy peaches which have a soft outer body but a hard core, implying that it is very easy to get to meet and become acquainted with an American but hard to get to know them really well. The caveat I would add to this, is that in international organizations, like SAP for example, that these differences are significantly diminished.
