Purpose

Functionality

SAP Data Services extracts, transforms and loads data (ETL).

SAP Data Services connects to numerous relational and in-memory databases, applications, files, Web services and even mainframes.

For a full list of supported sources and targets please reference the Data Services Product Availability Matrix.

SAP Data Services provides a rich set of transforms that enable Data Integration and Data Quality, and also provides Data Profiling and Text Data Processing functionality.

You can find a full list of supported transformations in the Data Services Reference Guide.

How do you work with Data Services?

You use the DS Designer client tool to design your ETL jobs.

You store your jobs  in local and central DBMS repositories.

Each ETL developer needs to have their own local repository. Your QA and PROD environments need to have their own local repositories.

If you have multiple developers you can use central repositories to facilitate multi-user development and versioning control.

Your can build two types of jobs in Data Services: batch or real-time.

Batch jobs are scheduled to run at specific times and are suitable for large data movements. They may require large amounts of memory, perform many complex data movements and transformations, and  may take longer to complete.

Classic DS real-time jobs are pre-loaded into memory and exposed as real-time services. They support a high number of quick data processing requests.

Both batch and real-time jobs can be accessed through Web Services.

Support for real-time extraction of large amounts of data is now provided through Data Services batch jobs which can be configured to work in a continuous fashion.

Your batch jobs can be scheduled via the Data Services scheduler, BOE Scheduler, or via third party schedulers.

You monitor and schedule your Data Services batch jobs, and configure and monitor your real-time services through the Data Services Management Console, a Web-based console.

Starting with version 4.0 Data Services integrates with the Business Intelligence Platform (BIP) to provide enterprise-level user management, application access control, and increased scalability in certain areas.

SAP Information Platform Services (IPS aka Mini-BOE) is a stripped down version of Business Intelligence application providing BIP functionality required for use with EIM products.

IPS does not need a separate license (it uses it's own built-in license).

While you can use your existing Business Intelligence install as the BIP platform for Data Services, we recommend using IPS.

Using the IPS rather then your existing BI install for your EIM needs allows you flexibility in patching your BI system without having to wait till a new BI patch becomes certified for use with DS.

Not all BIP versions are compatible with DS.
