From the SAP Terminology Guide:

"A business process (such as order processing) is a set of logically related activities performed within or across an organization to fulfill a defined business objective." (Source: industry term.)

The central role of business processes is one of the key differentiators of SAP's approach to enterprise SOA. Enterprise services are designed from the start with business processes in mind. The proper scope of an enterprise services is determined by the role it will play in automating one or more business processes. Standard business processes are part of the process component models that describe how SAP applications work. The role of the business process expert has been identified by SAP as crucial to effective implementation of enterprise applications and is being supported by model-driven development tools and by the SDN Business Process Expert (BPX) community.
