The Manufacturing Planning ES bundle provides data for a multi-task work environment of a material planner in order to make the planner's work more efficient.

Production Planning is done at various levels in a company. A small manufacturer may use only one MRP/ERP system to manage complete planning and execution needs. As the company grows, more complicated demand and supply matching needs may arise and it could mean having multiple MRP/ERP across different plants and probably an Advanced Planning and Scheduling systems like SAP APO as well. There is a need to consolidate the production planning information from these systems and provide a holistic picture for Material Planner or Production Planner. The ES Bundle 'Manufacturing Planning' provides a way out of this problem by making the required production planning functionalities available as enterprise services.

A material planner who is responsible for the supply of materials to cover the demands even across production plants needs an integrated view to evaluate automated planning results and unplanned or changed situations in demand coverage. It includes the evaluation of deviations of planned and actual goods receipt against scheduling agreements. Changed situations may require adoptions either on planning data like shifting demands or planned supply or on planning parameters like a defined safety stock. Adoptions in the lifecycle of products result in the critical phase-out/discontinuation of materials not longer used and the phase-in of the follow-up material which should occur without disruptions or stock not used up. Adoptions in the procurement of materials may occur with changed or not longer used agreements.

The planner would have to login to each of these systems and get the information for the relevant plants and then manually collate this information to understand the situation and then take decision.

How To Use This ES Bundle

The Manufacturing Planning ES bundle:

  • is available from SAP Enhancement Package 5 for SAP ERP 6.0 and SAP SCM.
  • enables manufacturing planners to work more efficient because this ES bundle provides all the relevant data for their multi-task work environment.

This section will explore a series of use cases which are supported by the Manufacturing Planning ES bundle. Each scenario will show how different outcomes can be achieved by using the enterprise services in different combinations. Note that these examples may refer to users directly invoking enterprise services. This illustrates the flow of the service operations; in fact, service operations are invoked by an application, by an application's user interface (UI), or by another service operation. While these examples illustrate a few of the ways that this ES bundle could be used, the intention is to show the flexibility and reusability of these business objects and enterprise service operations so that you will have a clearer understanding of how to best deploy them in your own environment. This wiki is also a space for you to share knowledge and collaborate with others who are implementing the Manufacturing Planning ES bundle.

Use Case 1: Evaluate Planning Results

A Material Planner, managing cross-plant material supply for production processes, needs to visualize the supply status at any given time and should be able take appropriate action. In this use case the Material Planner will be able to visualize the Material Requirement Status for several materials from different plants and evaluate the results.

Step 2: The material planner enters relevant planning search criteria like Material, Plant, MRP controller etc and get the list of Material with the details of Days of Supply left for those material. This information will help the planner to select the materials that he wants to analyze further.

Use Case 2: Evaluate Current Demand and Supply Situation for Material

Using the services in this ES Bundle, the Material Planner can check the current supply status of a material and if found unsatisfactory even change the planning parameters

Use Case 3: Material Planner cockpit to monitor planning status on APO (Advanced Planning and Optimization) and ERP systems.

Many customers use both APO systems and several ERP systems for production planning and execution. A Material Planner cockpit built by using the services in this ES Bundle helps a Material planner monitor the planning situation and take action. This use case shows how a planner can monitor stock of similar material across plants and if need initiate the transfer of stock from one plant to other or create a planned independent requirement.

Although the planning specifications of the required raw material are proper there could be unforeseen obstacles during the procurement process e.g. release of the scheduling agreement may be blocked or Goods receipts may be blocked.

Use Case 5: View the Material Discontinuation Details

Material Discontinuation is a mechanism by which a material could be discontinued to be used in production planning. A material could be discontinued for many reasons e.g. one part may have to be replaced by more technically advanced or cheaper alternative. A material planner needs to be aware of all the materials being discontinued so that he can better manage the supply for follow-up materials.
