In SAP Solution Manager 7.2, the Solution Documentation scenario has been completely rebuilt.

Existing solution documentation content in SAP Solution Manager 7.1 needs to be converted into the format required by the new 7.2 infrastructure, if you want to continue working with this content in 7.2. This transition process is called “Content Activation”.

Important: Depending on your specific situation, Content activation is not required in some use cases.

Content Activation required   Content Activation not required

If you use any of the following SAP Solution Manager 7.1 capabilities:

  • Solution Documentation Content (process structure and documents in projects and solutions)
  • Change Request Management or Quality Gate Management
  • Project Management
  • Automated Testing
  • Business Process Monitoring and Analytics

then you must go through content activation.

Content activation can only be executed once, you do not have a second shot. Hence be absolutely sure to define the right scope for content activation, where scope means the scope of content to be brought from SAP Solution Manager 7.1 to 7.2.

SAP supports you with tools, best practices and other documents for successful content activation. Crucially, the Content Activation Guide explains in chapter "Activating Common Landscape Scenarios" the before and after of your 7.1 projects and solutions.

All documents relevant for content activation can be found on this WIKI page.

In all cases not mentioned in "Content Activation required" above, and in particular, if you only used SAP Solution Manager 7.1 to execute services like, for example, EarlyWatch Alert or GoingLive.

To ensure that you do not need to go through content activation, read the relevant section in the Content Activation Guide. If the answer is a definite Yes, i.e. that you can work in 7.2 without working through content activation, call transaction PREPARE_ACTIVATION in your 7.1 system, enter Step 1 and click the "Opt Out of Content Activation" button.

News and Hot Topics

Important: You must read our KBA on how to implement Notes for Content Activation - or face trouble!

All customers who have implemented SAP Note 2439747 on SAP Solution Manager 7.2 before March 30, 2017 need to re-implement this SAP Note in its latest version (relevant for 7.2 SP03-05 only).

Important SAP Notes

Our experience shows that problems implementing the SAP Notes which set up content activation is a really bad start into the process.

Do yourself a favor and strictly follow the Note implementation instructions provided in KBA "How to implement SAP Notes to enable SAP Solution Manager 7.1 to 7.2 content activation".

Content Activation Guide

The Content Activation Guide provides comprehensive information about all aspects of content activation, and is a must-read in preparation for content activation.

Start preparing content activation while still in your 7.1 environment.

A preparation guided procedure will help you make key decisions on the 7.1 projects and solutions which need to be brought into the new 7.2 solution documentation environment. This process is called scoping.

Before starting the preparatory guided procedure, read the Content Activation Guide (and other materials, to the right) to gain a basic understanding of the new SAP Solution Manager 7.2 landscape and solution documentation concepts and how they compare to SAP Solution Manager 7.1.

Use the overview report for projects and solutions to identify projects and solutions relevant for content activation.

You can also test drive the content activation in your personal instance of a cloud-based SAP Solution Manager trial system in the SAP cloud appliance library (CAL). Find more information on this topic here.

Post-preparation Best Practices

Important: After finishing preparation activities (i.e. TA PREPARE_ACTIVATION), some best practices should be followed.

Use the SL toolset to upgrade to SAP Solution Manager 7.2. A stack split is performed implicitly during upgrade.

After successful upgrade, complete activation by using a guided procedure on the SAP Solution Manager 7.2 system.

During this procedure, project and solution content scoped during preparation is transferred into the new solution documentation environment and activated for use, together with related application content in ChaRM, QGM, IT PPM, BPMon and Test Suite.
