The management of business processes running on system landscapes requires control and governance in order to provide an efficient response in the event of an error and an effective improvement in the event of an identified problem or opportunity. Early and automatic detection of exceptional situations that affect business processes and information flows needs to lead to immediate and defined reaction and resolution, following established processes with dedicated roles and responsibilities. Continuous and efficient identification of improvement potential that increases throughput of, reduces backlog of, and improves users’ experience with business processes or particular steps thereof need to be followed up by implementation of relevant organizational and technical changes.
Business Process Operations (BPO) is part of program Run SAP like a Factory, which aims to establish an Operations Control Center (OCC) to manage efficient and effective operations of SAP-centric solutions. Business Process Operations creates transparency that indicates the status of business processes running on system components.
The following functional areas belong to Business Process Operations:
- Business Process and Interface Monitoring
- Business Process Improvement
- Data Consistency Management
- Job Management
For further information please see the Overview Business Process Operations or the wiki page "Business Process Operations Details". For details on the functional areas, see the respective boxes below.
Business Process Monitoring is the proactive and business process specific alerting for critical situations that disrupt the flow of your core business processes in your solution landscape. Via Business Process Monitoring you can get informed about such business critical situations before they become severe, increasing the reliability of your business processes and reducing the business process disruptions. SAP Solution Manager offers an automatic Business Process Monitoring function that uses many different out-of-the-box key figures for alerting.
Business Process Improvement is based on Business Process Analytics in SAP Solution Manager, which is a problem-oriented tool that allows customers to identify weaknesses in their existing SAP Business Suite processes and provides fast root cause analysis capabilities in order to make processes more efficient without changing the process design itself (no re-engineering). No matter if your backend is running on SAP HANA as a database or on any other database, you can also use Business Process Analytics powered by SAP HANA for an ad-hoc, real time analysis.
Job Management is a standardized formal process in order to support management of solution wide background operations, i.e. to process requests for new Jobs, or job changes, to document and schedule Jobs, and to perform error handling.
Job Management is one of the SAP E2E Solution Operations Standards, and is technically implemented through Job Management Work Center in SAP Solution Manager. It provides central access to Job operations in the Solution Landscape, and allows also the integration to external scheduling tools.
Data Consistency Management comprises the tools and procedures required to prevent, detect, investigate and correct inconsistencies in your solution landscape. This helps to ensure data quality in your solution, which safeguards the successful execution of your core business processes and prevents costly business process downtimes.
SAP Solution Manager provides many different tools to ensure data consistency. It also offers guidelines how to implement and operate a Data Consistency Management concept (including the configuration of the relevant tools) via the Run SAP like a Factory Roadmap for Business Process Operations and the Integration Validation Roadmap.
