The purpose of this document is to explain what Sybase Control Center &nbsp is, where to find it and how to deploy it for
ASE and Repserver.

The document will present step by step how to install Sybase Control Center (SCC), How to configure ASE and Repserver for SCC to be ready for managing and monitoring.

Sybase Control Center (SCC) Overview

Sybase Control Center is a server to monitor and manage Sybase products and it needs no license.
It supports Adaptive Server Enterprise(ASE), ASE Cluster Edition, Replication
Server products, Data Assurance, Sybase IQ and Sybase IQ Multiplex etc...
Sybase Control Center employs a Web-based multitier architecture that allows multiple SCC
Clients to monitor and manage all SCC supported products in one place. It requires browser
with Flash player 10.1 or greater like Internet Explorer 8 or greater or Firefox 3.6 or greater.
Sybase Control Center (SCC) will be replacing Sybase Central as a new tool to manage
Sybase products.
A typical SCC application will have one SCC server running where it manages
multiple ASEs, multiple Repserver, multiple IQs and there will be multiple SCC clients
log onto SCC server through Web browser to manage them.
A graphical view of typical SCC application looks like this:
- &nbsp
Sybase Control Center server (SCC) can support up to 15 monitored resources (ASE/Repserver/IQ...)
and up to four SCC clients logged in at the same time

Where can I get SCC software?

ASE 15.7 GA release includes a DVD - Sybase Control Center 3.2.3. However, you want to install the latest
version of SCC which is 3.2.7. The SCC 3.2.7 version can be downloaded from EBF/Maintenance Web site,

How do I install SCC Software?

Once downloaded, Sybase recommends to install SCC software on a machine other than the one you plan to run Adaptive Server.
The SCC server is platform independent so for example if your ASE is running on Linux, you can install SCC software on another
OS platform like Linux, Window ... to monitor and manage Sybase Products.
Before installation, you need to:
1. Identify a host on which to run each Sybase Control Center server you need to deploy.
2. Make sure the computer on which you plan to run Sybase Control Center meets the System Requirements.
3. Make sure the computer on which you plan to run SCC has good network connectivity to the servers
it will manage and to the client workstations.
A complete list of tasks is advised in here:

SCC can be installed in two ways:
1. Installing with the Sybase Installer
2. Installing with a Response File

Installing with Sybase Installer

•Launch the installer for Windows

  • Right Click on setup.exe or setupConsole.exe
  • select “Run as Administrator”
    •Launch the installer from Unix
  • execute setup.bin
    •Select All “Management User Interface”
•Make sure all the default ports used by SCC are not used.
Otherwise, enter a different port number
•Enter password for sccadmin and uafadmin when asked

Installing with a Response File

1. Modify “sample_response.txt” template for the following:

  • USER_INSTALL_DIR=/work/scc_327
    2. Run Installer in silent mode with a reponse file
Select Start > All Programs > Accessories. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
Alternatively, enter cmd in the Start Menu search box and press Shift+Ctrl+Enter.
    setupConsole.exe –f <responseFileName> -i silent
    setup.bin –f <responseFileName> -i silent

    Starting And Stopping SCC server

Depending where SCC is installed, in Windows or Unix,
    In Windows:
    • Run as administrator
    %SYBASE%\SCC-3_2\bin\scc.bat –stop|-shutdown
    • Open Control Panel ->
    • - select Administrative Tools -> Services
  • right click on SCC from Service list and choose start or stop
    In Unix:
    • Set environment variables:
    source SYBASE.csh
    •Execute in foreground: $SYBASE/SCC-3_2/bin/
    •Execute in background
    nohup ./ >& scc-console.out &
•To shut down in foreground, execute shutdown from the prompt:
    scc-console prompt> shutdown
    •To shutdown in background : $SYBASE/SCC-3_2/bin/ --stop

    Configuration ASE/Repserver for Monitoring

Once SCC server is started successfully, you can setup ASE/Repserver to be monitored by SCC.

    Setup in ASE

    •sp_configure “enable montoring”, 1
    •sp_role “grant”, mon_role, sa

    Log on to SCC server

    1. Use Internet Explorer or Firefox to launch SCC Web Client in order to log on to SCC server:
    Login user: sccadmin
    Password: Sybase4me
    2. Register ASE and Repserver with SCC
    Register ASE with SCC
    -Select Resources > Register
    -Resource name: ASE servername
-Resource Type: choose “ASE server” for ASE 15.0.2 or later
choose “ASE server, replication only” for Pre-ASE 15.0.2
-Server Host Name: ASE Unix/Window host name
    -Port Number: ASE port number
    Register Repserver with SCC
    -select Resources > Register
    -Resource name: Repserver name
    -Resource Type: choose “Replication server”
-Server Host Name: repserver Unix/Window host name
    -Port Number: repserver port number
-RSSD Hostname: ASE servername for RSSD
-RSSD Port number: ASE servername port number

3. Create a perspective and add resource to the perspective
-Choose perspective -> select new -> enter a name : mysystem
-Choose view -> click open -> click "Resource Explorer"
-Click on your resource name -> Click Resources -> Click "Add Resource to Perspective"
4. Authenticate Resources for ASE and Repserver
ASE/Repserver needs to be authenticated to establish connection with ASE

  • In Perpective Resources -> click on ASEservername -> click on down-arrow > select Authenticate:
    ASE username: sa
    ASE password:
  • In Perpective Resources -> click on Repservername -> click on down-arrow > select Authenticate:
    ASE username: sa
    ASE password:
    RSSD Username: xxxx_RSSD_prim
    RSSD password: xxxx_RSSD_prim_ps

    Start monitoring ASE and Repserver

  • From Perspective tab -> Choose select -> click on your perspective name
  • Click on down-arrow next to the ASE or Repserver name -> click on monitor
  • Once monitor screen pops up, you can choose items listed to monitor
