Blockchains go Mainstream - Challenges to developing, deploying and monetizing blockchain business applications in 2018

After almost ten years in the shadows, blockchain technology is suddenly exploding into mainstream consciousness faster and more completely than any technology in recent memory. Suddenly everyone from small startups to major corporations are all building business solutions that use crypto and shared ledger technology on a wide variety of platforms including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Hyperledger, Corda and numerous others. While the promise of blockchain technology is real, the challenges facing these implementors are significant. The concept of partially or fully decentralized applications drive the promise of blockchain tech, but early adopters are finding that architecting such solutions requires a different way of thinking, the technology is complicated and immature, and even old monetization models such a SaaS are breaking down. This presentation will provide some real world experiences that put the use of blockchain technology into perspective, highlight the benefits and survey some of the very real risks. At the conclusion of the talk attendees will have a better understanding of what blockchain really means for business and be better prepared to make decisions regarding the use of this very trendy technology.
