What’s New in BW 7.3?

This article provides an overview on the planned new capabilities of SAP NetWeaver BW 7.3

Naming Change

The SAP NetWeaver Business Intelligence has been renamed as SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse.

In this SAP NetWeaver BW has covered Warehouse and Analytical.

1.     Hybrid providers

HybridProvider consists of a DSO, InfoObject and automatically generated data flow between these objects. The cool thing with HybridProvider is during run time it combines the mass historic data in the InfoCube with latest data in the DSO. It certainly helps in displaying most current data in real time reporting scenarios.

To explain this further, this means that the data in the new request that is loaded into DSO but not yet loaded into InfoCube is available for reporting. This also applies for BWA so the data in the request that is not yet indexed in BWA is available for reporting.

With HybridProvider and BWA 7.2 it is possible to load data directly into BWA skipping InfoCube by switching off database persistency of InfoCube.


2.     Graphical Dataflow modeler

A graphical way of building a data model is introduced in BW 7.3. The Graphical Dataflow Modeler is a new function within the Administrator Workbench (T-code RSA1). Customer can define template data flows which can be used for future projects. SAP also provides best practice templates. Wizard based data flow modeling supports generation of related data flow objects including new info objects as needed. One can copy existing dataflow leveraging a "Wizard Like" user interface. Another nice new feature is it now supports copying of existing process chains.

3.     Accelerated data loads

Accelerated Data loads helps to increasing performance and load time in to DSO has been reduced by up to 40% when compared to BI 7.0.

DataStore objects

Support for database partitioning by time characteristics. Remodeling of DataStore objects

Master data

Optimized delta load for master data due to package fetch instead of single look-ups

Init-load performance runtime option - “insert only” prevents look-ups during activation

Near-Line Storage (NLS)

Integration into Data Mart Layer (Support of MultiProvider)

Selections on navigational attributes will be passed to NLS

4.     Semantic partitioning

In BW 3.5 and BI 7.x partition the data in InfoCube based on characteristic mainly (Time characteristics) to improve the query performance. You want partition based time characteristics. you need to create a InfoCube and transformation for each year and filter out the year in the DTP. So far all of these activities are manual and repetitive. 

Semantic Partitioning allows wizard based partitioning of InfoCube and DSOs. With Semantic Partitioning Object the system automatically generates corresponding modeling objects like DTP (including respective filter criteria depending on the data target) and transformations as well as process chain.

It also supports In-Memory SAP NetWeaver BWA support, Full integration with archiving and Near Line Storage functionality and Flexible definition of partitions via customer coding (Business Add-Insstage:\


5.     Integrated planning front end

In BW 3.5 and 7.X the Integrated planning working with Java stack in new BW 7.3 are working only ABAP stack ( without Java Stack BW 7.3 is working )

ABAP based Planning Modeler for a non-disruptive customizing of planning objects and their related BW objects

The ABAP-based Planning Modeler does not require functionalities from the Java Stack for BEx Analyzer based planning applications

But SAP has now migrated the IP frontend to a traditional transaction screen within the SAPGUI. The screens are quicker and easier to use, and have no dependency on either a Portal or Java stack.

Planning is very user friendly and performance also improved the BW integrated planning in Sap 7.3

6.     Analytical indexes

It helps to improve the query performance and in time reporting is possible. An Analytical Index is a transient dataset that is stored within the BWA or HANA.  Business Objects can be used to report on them directly. They are defined and loaded from within the Analysis Process Designer and can contain the results of a JOIN between a CSV file and query.

Data Extraction

In BW 7.3 External delta Extraction can be done with DB Connect, UD connect, flat file and Web services. Can schedule Data loads and extractions using BO services. Process Monitoring ( RSPCM)has many new added features for better process chain monitoring .

Infopackage: In BW 7.3 a new option "Switch Info Pack. in PC to Delta" under update tab of InfoPackage. If you check this option the InfoPackage will be automatically executed as delta package if already there is a successful initialization. Otherwise, it will be executed as a init package when there is no successful initialization. This option is very useful and save time for new projects and enhancements

Data Transfer Process: DTP load fails with one off error messages like RFC connection error, missing packets, database connection issues etc. Usually these are resolved by repeating the failed DTP load. 

In BW 7.3 there is an option under execute tab which if you check will automatically repeat red requests in process chains.



DataSource: A new type of web- Services based Datasource can created which pulls data from a third party source system into PSA. Only possible for Extracting for Transactional data and master data

Data store object       

Faster activation: (Increasing from 20 to 40 %.) Support for database partitioning by time characteristics and ability to remodel DSO without reloads. Consistency check for write optimized DSOs can be turned off hence, faster loads.


Semantic Partitioning objects wizards allow for automated partitioning of large objects and thereby increased performance. New HybridProvider allows link between historical data in InfoCube and Latest updates in DSO hence, Faster Data access.


Can able to do mass changes for authorization for users, hierarchies and Nodes (Faster development and maintenance)

Web tools

Web Application Designer remains, but Bi Services connectors (BICS) is better solution for Xcelsius and analysis Tools.
